Olathe NEA Advocacy Day

The word that best encapsulates the 2020-2021 school year is change.

Whether it be teaching high school calculus to a preschool classroom, educators are working hard to craft lessons in an ever-changing environment. The 2020-2021 school year looks different than past years, from in-person, remote, hybrid, and those that teach both remote and in-person simultaneously.

This work has caused system-wide changes not only to certified/licensed educators and school nurses. Education support professionals are on the front lines in working to meet the educational needs such as paraprofessionals, bus drivers, administrative assistants, food services, technology professionals, just to name a few.

While educators are digging deep to meet their students’ educational needs, we also acknowledge the difficulty that this year has placed on our community as we continue to feel the strain of the pandemic on every aspect of our lives.

Olathe NEA believes it will take all us to meet the educational demands of our students. Olathe NEA is calling for a day of advocacy. We are asking educators, parents, and community members to engage on Thursday, December 3, 2020, in one of these four actions:

1) Wear red to support educators and school staff. Share that photo on social media with #WeAreOlatheSchools

2) Speak at the Olathe Public Schools Board of Education meeting about your experience during the 2020-2021 school year on Thursday, December 3, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. by emailing  jbondurantec@olatheschools.org and ask to make a public comment at the board meeting. Any requests to provide public comment must be made by noon on December 3, 2020.

3) Share your 2020-2021 School Year Story at www.MyClassMyStory.org

4) Ask three friends or family members to be part of this day of action.

Only together can we meet the challenges of our time to provide an education for our students.
